🥊 Rocky IV (1985)
Rocky IV (1985) is the fourth installment in the Rocky franchise, written, directed by, and starring Sylvester Stallone. The film follows Rocky Balboa as he faces a powerful Soviet boxer and becomes involved in a symbolic confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
After winning the heavyweight championship, Rocky is enjoying a comfortable life with his wife Adrian, his son Robert, and his close friend Apollo Creed. Apollo, once Rocky’s greatest rival and later his friend, wants to return to the spotlight and prove that he can still compete.
A new fighter arrives from the Soviet Union: Ivan Drago, an enormous and incredibly powerful amateur boxer played by Dolph Lundgren. Drago is presented as a highly trained athlete supported by advanced Soviet technology and scientific testing. Apollo becomes interested in fighting him in an exhibition match.
Rocky is concerned about Apollo’s decision but agrees to support his friend. The exhibition takes place in Las Vegas, with Apollo entering the ring in an extravagant show inspired by his former boxing career.
At first, Apollo appears confident and energetic. However, Drago’s strength quickly becomes obvious. Apollo is unable to match the Soviet fighter’s power, and Drago repeatedly lands devastating punches.
During the fight, Rocky watches helplessly as Apollo is brutally beaten. Apollo eventually collapses in the ring and dies from his injuries. His death deeply devastates Rocky and everyone who knew him.
Rocky becomes determined to fight Drago himself. Drago shows little remorse for Apollo’s death, and the Soviet authorities continue promoting him as an unstoppable athlete. Rocky challenges Drago to a boxing match in the Soviet Union.
Adrian strongly opposes Rocky’s decision. She fears that Rocky will suffer the same fate as Apollo. Despite her concerns, Rocky travels to Siberia to train for the fight.
Rocky’s training is completely different from Drago’s scientific preparation. While Drago uses sophisticated equipment and medical technology, Rocky trains in the wilderness. He runs through deep snow, chops wood, lifts heavy objects, and performs exhausting physical exercises.
Eventually, Rocky and Drago meet in Moscow before a massive crowd. Unlike a normal championship fight, the match becomes a symbolic battle between two nations.
Drago dominates the early rounds with his tremendous strength, but Rocky refuses to stay down. He continues taking punishment and eventually cuts Drago’s face, shocking the Soviet crowd.
As the fight continues, the audience begins turning against Drago and supporting Rocky. Drago becomes frustrated because he has never faced an opponent who can withstand his power.
In the final rounds, Rocky fights with everything he has. Drago becomes exhausted, while Rocky continues pushing forward. Rocky eventually knocks Drago down and wins the fight by knockout.
After the victory, Rocky addresses the Soviet audience. He explains that people can change and that the fight demonstrated that enemies can become united through respect and competition.
Rocky IV is ultimately a story about friendship, revenge, determination, patriotism, sacrifice, and overcoming seemingly impossible odds. It transforms a boxing match into a larger symbol of Cold War rivalry while showing Rocky’s refusal to surrender, even against an opponent who appears almost unbeatable.
