After the events of Rambo: First Blood Part II, John Rambo has left the United States and is living quietly in Thailand. He spends his time helping at a Buddhist monastery and participating in traditional stick-fighting matches to earn money for the monks.
Colonel Trautman arrives in Thailand and asks Rambo to join a secret mission in Afghanistan. The mission involves delivering weapons to Afghan fighters who are resisting the Soviet military occupation.

Rambo refuses to participate. He has become tired of war and wants to live peacefully. Trautman leaves without him and joins the mission himself.
During the operation, Trautman is captured by Soviet forces led by the ruthless Colonel Zaysen. When Rambo learns that his former commander has been taken prisoner, he realizes that he cannot simply stand by.
Rambo travels secretly to Afghanistan with the help of a local contact. He enters a dangerous war zone where Soviet troops control villages and use brutal tactics against civilians.
Rambo meets Mousa Ghani, an Afghan fighter who helps him navigate the country. Mousa tells Rambo about the resistance and the suffering of the local people.
Rambo eventually discovers that Trautman is being held at a heavily guarded Soviet fortress. He infiltrates the facility and attempts to rescue his former commander.
After reaching Trautman, Rambo helps him escape, but their freedom does not last. Soviet forces pursue them through the mountains and attack the resistance fighters.
Rambo repeatedly risks his life to protect Trautman and the Afghan fighters. He uses his military skills, weapons, explosives, and knowledge of guerrilla warfare to attack the much larger Soviet force.
One of the film’s major themes is Rambo’s loyalty to Trautman. Trautman was one of the few people who understood Rambo after the Vietnam War, and Rambo considers him more than simply a former commander. He is a father figure and trusted friend.
The final battle takes place near a Soviet military base. Rambo and the Afghan fighters launch a massive assault against the Soviet forces.
Rambo eventually confronts Colonel Zaysen in a brutal fight. After a fierce battle, Rambo defeats him and destroys the Soviet military equipment.

Trautman survives, and Rambo prepares to leave Afghanistan. Although he has once again experienced the horrors of war, his mission has given him a sense of purpose.
Rambo III is ultimately a story about loyalty, friendship, courage, sacrifice, and standing up for people who cannot defend themselves. Rambo initially wants nothing more than to live peacefully, but when his friend is captured, he returns to the battlefield because he refuses to abandon someone he loves.
The film also continues the central theme of the Rambo series: a soldier may leave the war, but the memories and responsibilities of war can remain with him forever.
